Event Promoters: It’s Easy to Stay Up-to-Date in Your Industry
When you love your job, sometimes it’s easy to forget that it is a job. But, just like any other gig, event promoters need to stay current with industry trends.
Luckily, you don’t have to devote a lot of time to this. Ten or 15 minutes a day is really all it takes to keep up with the news and happenings in your world. Technology makes staying current a breeze, so pick the best time of day for you (preferably when you’re nice and alert) and then add “Industry News Updates” to your daily schedule.
Who Do You Follow?
If you aren’t following other event promoters and event planning sites on Twitter and Facebook, you need to start. You’ll find industry news, places to market your event, and start connecting with people from every facet of the industry.
Not sure where to start? Just enter “event promoter” into the search bar and start scrolling. Don’t stop there, though. Follow the leaders in your own niche and sites like Eventbrite.
Oh, it should go without saying, but you need separate social media accounts for your professional persona. Seriously. Do not make the mistake of posting angry rants to politicians or comedians under your personal brand.
Use Twitter Like a Pro
Finding the right content can seem like half the battle, but Twitter has a number of tools that make it easier to cut through the Twitter noise.
The two tools you’ll use the most are Advanced Search and Twitter Lists. The search tool helps you find accounts to follow and search for relevant hashtags. The list tool lets you create lists of users. It also allows you to subscribe to someone else’s list. Check out this piece from Post Planner to find the best lists in your niche.
Become a Newsletter Subscriber
The easiest way to stay on top of what’s happening in your industry is subscribing to newsletters, blogs, and online trades and/or magazines. The stories come directly to your inbox. Typically, posts occur weekly at most, so even if you subscribe to a half-dozen of them, that gives you one a day to read during your scheduled daily update.
Listen to Podcasts
If you spend any time commuting, running on the treadmill, or taking a walk, make the most of your time by listening to podcasts. Check out Savvy Event Planner or head over to iTunes or Android to find an enormous selection of podcasts for event promotion, event planning, or podcasts around your particular niche.
Get Subreddit Updates
Reddit has an unbelievable amount of content available, but finding relevant content can be a bear, even when using the search feature. Not surprising, since Reddit has tens of millions of users and literally billions of comments.
Subreddit lets you narrow your search to find truly relevant articles. Take it a step further and use metareddit to look at the top trending topics and articles. If you’re new to Reddit, check out this post from Articulate Ventures. It walks you through the setup process, building your page, and some general tips for using Reddit.
Stick It In Your Pocket
So, you’ve found all these great articles and fabulous industry news, but you don’t have time to read them right now. Keeping track of them all is a headache – URLs aren’t exactly easy to remember. The solution is the Pocket app.
This app lets you save pretty much anything – articles, graphics, and videos – from 1,500 other apps, including Twitter, Pulse, and Flipboard. You can access Pocket from any device, it’s compatible with both Apple and Android, and you don’t even need an Internet connection to access the content you save. Best of all? It’s totally free.
Keep It Up
Once you start, keep going. Add your daily update session to your schedule and honor it the same way you would an appointment with a client. Find ways to make it easy, and be smart about it. Some of these ideas not only keep you up-to-date on what’s happening in your world, they also help you network and promote your brand.
